Without a doubt one of the most famous landmarks in the world, the Eiffel Tower (la Tour Eiffel) was built by Gustave Eiffel over a period of two years and two months between January 26, 1887 and March 30, 1889. It stands next to the river Seine in the west of Paris, and overlooks the Champs de Mars and the whole of the beautiful city of Paris.

When it was first decided to build the Eiffel Tower, there was a public outcry, with many important and famous people criticizing the contruction of this "eyesore". Today, it is impossible to imagine Paris without it!

The first level is 57 metres off the ground. There is a restaurant on the second level (Le Jules Verne) which is 115 metres above ground level. The third level is 274 metres higher than the city of Paris and the total height, including the TV and radio antennaes on top, is 320 metres. It weighs 7 000 tonnes and was the world's tallest building until 1931 when New York's Empire State Building was constructed. It takes 1 662 steps to reach the top or you can take a lift from the ground to the first and second levels before hopping onto a different lift for the trip up to the third platform.

The tower is held together with 2 500 407 rivets and every seven years, it is painted using 52 tons of brown paint. The tower never sways more than 12 centimetres, and on a clear day it is possible to see for 67 kilometres!

This massive construction cost 8 000 000 francs (about 2 000 000 Australian dollars). 900 000 of that was for foundations; 3 800 000 for all the metal and assembly; 200 000 for painting; 1 200 000 for machinery and lifts; and 400 000 for decoration and restaurants. In the first six months, the Eiffel Tower had 1 968 287 visitors!

C'est un peu dangereux mais c'est la vie !
