Introduction
This program is aimed at students who intend to become teachers of French,at young teachers, and at pre-service qualified teachers. (The nature of this employment makes it inappropriate for experienced language teachers.)
This program is now also opened to students of other disciplines (such as commerce, medicine, engineering) who can demonstrate a competence in French but seek to increase their linguistic and cultural proficiency. To apply, students must have completed at least two years of university studies at the time of appointment (ie. October 2010).
In their applications candidates are given the possibility of expressing a preferred geographical location and an educational sector. Although every effort will be made to take into account these choices, no guarantee can be given that either will be granted.
Positions available & contract duration
80 positions are offered to Australian nationals (between 20 and 30 years of age) in:

Candidates may request the age group that they would prefer to work with. The French authorities will try to take requests into consideration but CANNOT guarantee that requests will be met.

Studying in France
Language assistants can only be non-registered students at French universities due to the type and duration of their visa (D). This means the assistant is not allowed to take exams. The French universities can only issue a « certificate of attendance » which may be validated by the assistant’s home university.
Social security
Assistants are covered by the French Social Security system from the time they take up their position (1 October) until the end of their assistantship. Travel to and from France is the responsibility of the assistant. A monthly salary of 957.21 Euros in metropolitan France, and of about 1250-1370 Euros in the overseas Departments (Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guyana and La Réunion) is provided.

Role of the Assistant
Tasks to be fulfilled by the assistant include:
Providing help in the classroom in oral and written English with small groups of students for 12 hours per week.
Acting as a resource person by providing linguistic and cultural assistance to teachers.
Make recordings on tape for the audio-visual resources of the school’s library.
The assistant’s timetable may be shared between two schools.
Eligibility
Candidates must be Australian citizens
Candidates should be between 20 and 30 years of age at the time of taking up their positions, (from 1 October 2010). They should also preferably be single, as the salary of an assistant is not adequate to support dependents.
