Ambassador of France awards Professor Serge Tcherkézoff insignia of Knight in the Ordre de la Légion d’honneur

His Excellency Mr. Christophe Lecourtier, Ambassador of the Republic of France in Australia, presented the insignia of Knight in the Ordre de la Légion d’honneur (Order of the Legion of Honour) to Professor Serge Tcherkézoff on Monday April 18, 2016, at the Résidence de France in Canberra.

Professor Tcherkezoff, Professor Emeritus of the Australian National University and the co-founder of the EHESS-ANU cluster, was awarded this honour for his academic and research excellence in Pacific Studies, and for his great contribution to the international recognition and regional integration of the South Pacific.

According to Ambassador Lecourtier, Professor Tcherkézoff has “been a pioneer in the implementation of Research institutions dedicated to Pacific Studies”, and has “built up a powerful and innovative Pacific Studies research network, with numerous linkages and synergies in all English speaking island states, New Zealand, Australia, French Polynesia and New Caledonia”. Aside from his significant research in Pacific and collaboration with institutions in the South Pacific, Professor Tcherkézoff co-founded alongside the late Professor Darrell Tryon the EHESS-ANU Cluster (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales –Australian National University), in partnership with the Embassy of France and the French Pacific Fund. To date, the EHESS has been the only French Research Institution permanently established in Australia.

The award ceremony was witnessed by Professor Brian Schmidt, Vice-Chancellor of the Australian National University, who conveyed his warm congratulations and appreciation for Professor Tcherkézoff’s work.
