A ceremony to confer the rank of Knight in the Legion in the legion of Honour on five Australian veterans who fought for the liberation of France during the Second World War took place on the 15th of April on the French Navy frigate FNS Vendémiaire.
Ambassador Lecourtier decorated Mr. Kenneth Briggs, Mr. William Grey, Mr. Stanislaus Donnellan, Mr. Billy McFadden et Mr. Clifford Stevens.
The Australian veterans received their insignia as part of an initiative to honour veterans who fought for the Liberation of France announced by the President of the French Republic, François Hollande on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Second World War.
The Legion of Honour is an order of distinction first established by Napoleon Bonaparte in May 1802. It is the highest decoration bestowed in France, which recognises distinguished services for France.
